Villa L’Aiglon: An architectural gem of the 20th century

Villa L'Aiglon is one of the architectural gems of the French Riviera. Located in the commune of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, this Belle Epoque-style villa overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and the Principality of Monaco. With its rich history, it perfectly illustrates the architectural beauty of the early 20th century in the heart of an exceptional natural setting.
A fascinating story
Construction work on the Aiglon began in 1891. Architect Henri Schmidt was commissioned for this project by the Blanc family, who were actively involved in the development of the Société des Bains de Mer de Monaco.

The Villa seems to owe its name to Napoleon II, and more specifically to his nickname, the Eagle, who was the son of Napoleon Bonaparte and Marie Louise of Austria. This symbol of imperial grandeur is reflected in the spirit of the villa, with its impressive architecture and vast landscaped gardens. Architect Charles Garnier, renowned for his prestigious work on the Paris Opera House and the Monte Carlo Opera House, also added his personal touch to the construction.
The Villa l'Aiglon, both a quiet retreat and a prestigious reception centre, welcomed many personalities and figures from high society throughout the 20th century. Among its famous guests were artists, writers, aristocrats, politicians and members of the leading European royal families.

Prestigious architecture
The villa's architecture is distinctly Belle Époque. It features all the hallmarks of early 20th-century bourgeois construction, including balustrades adorning rounded balconies, high ceilings with beautiful cornices, and elegant façades with majestic colonnades.
The large windows typical of buildings from this period allow natural light to flood into the spacious reception rooms while offering spectacular views of the sea. The large landscaped garden surrounding the villa was designed to create a harmonious transition between the elegance of the interior architecture and the tranquility of lush nature.
The rooms of the villa are spacious and richly decorated, with refined details and elements that bear witness to the luxury of yesteryear. The living rooms, bedrooms and reception areas have been furnished with refined taste, combining comfort and prestige. The interior of the palace-like villa has been designed to offer both intimacy and grandeur, with spaces that are both welcoming and majestic.
