The beginning of a life driven by money

François Blanc and his twin brother, Louis Blanc, are born the 12th of december 1806 in the Vaucluse’s countryside. Thanks to their father, tax collector, they became passionate by money. Their lives follow each other, both becoming stockbrokers in Bordeaux where they developed a system that made them millionaires, notably by using the modern invention of the telegraph.

During their journey, they decide to move to Luxembourg, to build a casino. This is where François met Madeleine Huguelin, his first wife and the mother of his two children, Charles and Camille (futur president of the Société des Bains de Mer of Monte-Carlo).

Growing popularity

The two brothers were approached by Landgrave Louis-Guillaume de Hombourg to create a seaside resort, which they accepted. Amusement arcades, spas, theatres, ballrooms, gardens, restaurants and palaces attracted a European high society crowd.

In 1852, Louis Blanc died of an illness, followed by Madeleine who also died the same year. François was left alone with his two children. Two years later, he married Marie Hensel, nicknamed ‘Madame Monte-Carlo’ because she reigned over the Principality's cultural life until her death.

The rescue of the Principality and the creation of the Société des Bains de Mer of Monte-Carlo

Finally, in the early 1860s, the Principality was on the verge of financial collapse. Prince Charles III, the head of the Principality, asked François Blanc, nicknamed the ‘Magician of Hombourg’, to come and create a casino. In 1863, a gaming concession contract was signed for a period of 50 years. The Principality flourished, and Monte-Carlo, with its casino, palaces and prestigious villas, was born.

A prestigious place to live, La Villa l'Echauguette

During his time in Monaco, François Blanc lived in the villa l'Echauguette, a jewel of Monegasque real estate and one of the few independent villas in the Principality of Monte Carlo. This villa offers an exceptional view of the sea, the famous Port Hercule, the Palais Princier and the Formula 1 Circuit. It's a chance to step back in time to when Monaco was still in its infancy, a time when François Blanc transformed Monaco's destiny.
